How domestic oil tank installation works

Replacing your old oil tank doesn’t need to mean days of disruption or uncertainty. Our experienced, OFTEC-registered oil tank installers manage the entire process from start to finish – often within half a day – making the switch as straightforward and stress free as possible.

Here’s what the process looks like:

    1. Safely removing the oil. We’ll transfer any remaining heating oil from your existing tank and store it securely in a temporary holding vessel.
    2. Decommissioning the old tank. Once emptied, we’ll disconnect and decommission the old equipment and remove it for environmentally responsible disposal.
    3. Installing your new system. Your new oil tank will be positioned on a suitable base, securely installed, and checked to ensure it complies with building regulations.
    4. Connecting and testing. We’ll reconnect the pipework and carry out tests to confirm the system is free from leaks and trapped air, and appliances are operating as they should.
    5. Returning your heating oil. Oil is transferred into the new tank, removing any sludge, water, or other contaminants to help protect performance from day one.
    6. Completing the paperwork. Finally, we will register the compliant installation, ready for local building control sign-off where required.

The benefits of domestic oil tank upkeep

Like any equipment within your home, your heating oil system performs best when it’s properly maintained. Regular domestic oil tank inspections, as well as professional cleaning, help keep everything operating safely and efficiently, while reducing the likelihood of avoidable problems developing.

The benefits of professional upkeep include:

    • Improved safety by identifying wear, damage, or leaks before they become a risk to your property or the environment
    • Greater reliability with a heating system that’s less likely to suffer unexpected breakdowns or fuel supply issues
    • Better heating oil quality by removing water, sludge, and other contaminants that can affect performance
    • Lower long-term costs by resolving minor issues early, helping you avoid more extensive repairs or remediation work
    • Continued compliance with current regulations, making sure your oil storage system remains fit for purpose

However, even with the best care, every oil tank will eventually reach the end of its serviceable life. If your system is showing signs of corrosion, cracking, UV damage, instability, leaks, persistent fuel odours, or is approaching 15–20 years old, replacement is often the safest and most cost-effective solution. Our OFTEC-accredited engineers can assess your setup and advise which route is the most suitable for its current condition.
