At Moorland Fuels we recognise that money is tight all round right now. The unemployment numbers are rising and so too is inflation. All of this is causing everyone to tighten their belts and look for ways to save money. Of course one of the first places people look to save money is by cutting back on preventative maintenance. Do I really need all the coverage provided by my insurance, can I tweak the policy so I am still covered but not at such a high level? Do I really need to have my chimney swept this year, I am sure there won’t be a fire. Or the one we are hearing right now, my boiler is working fine, so I don’t need to pay to get it serviced.
The trouble with trying to save money on short-term preventative measures, is that invariably the decision comes back to haunt you in the longer term. Our boiler team see this all too often with boiler servicing. In trying to save the £99 cost (including VAT) of an annual service, we often see people spending £100s of pounds replacing parts due to poor maintenance and (even £1000s of pounds because the boiler has leaked and flooded their house.)
While thankfully this is a relatively rare occurrence, regular servicing of your boiler can help pinpoint potential problems before they arise such as corrosion on the inside of your boiler (a common problem in areas like Devon where the water is hard). Not only can a service flag up problems, but cleaning the boiler will help improve its efficiency, saving you money on your monthly heating bills.
Just think about what you regularly spend £100 plus on – a weekly grocery shop, your annual TV license (£145), petrol, a month’s car insurance. While we all grumble about paying these prices, we know that these are things we can’t / don’t want to do without. You should consider an annual boiler service in the same way – you might not want to do it, but you know it is going to make your life easier in the long run.
