The Healthy Protection Agency is urging people to have their fossil fuel burning boilers, heaters and cookers serviced by a registered engineer before the weather turns cold, to avoid the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning is a significant risk to people in the United Kingdom, particularly in the winter months, and causes around 50 people to die each year in England and Wales alone. The gas is colorless, odorless and tasteless which makes it very difficult to detect. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and chest pains. At high levels, carbon monoxide can cause collapse, loss of consciousness and death.
The HPA recommends people have their appliances checked, install a carbon monoxide monitor and have adequate ventilation in rooms with heating appliances.
